tina turner

Many of us know Tina Turner by a variety of titles including “The Queen of Rock & Roll”, “the truest rock diva of all”, “the most dynamic female soul singer in the history of the music”, “one of soul music’s most incendiary performers”, and “soul’s first real diva”. Her fans know Tina for her brilliant accomplishments as an African-American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress. Her accomplishments spanned through music genres such as R&B, dance, soul, pop, and funk along with winning eight Grammy Awards.

Tina Turner was born on November 26, 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee and given the name Anna Mae Bullock. Her parents were Zelma Currie who was employed in a factory and Floyd Richard Bullock who was a farm overseer, a factory worker, and a Baptist deacon. She along with her sister, Alline, was abandoned by both parents for a short period of time, however, in 1956 the sisters moved to St. Louis to be reunited with their mother.

While living in St. Louis, Anna met Ike Turner. She persuaded him to hear her sing after much persistence. By 1958, Anna was working with Ike. At the young age of 18, Ike changed her name to Tina from Sheena: Queen of the Jungle and put her in the spotlight at a famous soul revue put on by Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm.

Tina got her start when a singer that was scheduled to record the R&B song, “A Fool in Love”, did not show up for the recording session and Tina filled in. This first song by Tina hit #2 on the R&B charts and crossed over to the top 30 of the US pop chart. Shortly afterwards, Ike saw the potential and immediately changed the name of his band from The Kings of Rhythm to the Tina Turner Revue.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s Ike and Tina had many hits including “A Fool in Love”, "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "I Idolize You," "Nutbush City Limits" and "River Deep, Mountain High".

Many know Tina from her signature hit which was her version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s song “Proud Mary.”

Tina has now retired from major tours, however, she does make collaborations and public appearances. A new DVD recently released on August 28, 2007 and in May she headlined a benefit concert for the Cauldwell Children’s Charity at London’s Natural History Museum.
