Canadian Tamia Marilyn Washington was born on May 9, 1975 in Windsor, Ontario, and is married to Grant Hill, a NBA basketball player. However, she is not known for whom her husband might be, she has made a name for herself studying music and drama since she was only ten years old, performing in many Windsor's theatrical and choirs presentations.
Tamia earned a reputation as an excellent singer that eventually brought her the YTV Vocal Achievement Award (1993), The Steve Ross Music Scholarship in 1994 as an Honor Youth Delegate at the 33rd American Academy of Achievement's Annual Salute to Excellence.
Another important achievement in Tamia's career came through a gala honoring Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, in which she performed to a 75,000 audience. Succeeding in every new musical step, Tamia went on a benefit tour along with American singer Kenny Loggins and other popular fellow musicians including Julio, Kenny G, and Peabo Bryson.
Later in 1994, she was attending a party in Los Angeles for Luther Vandross that introduced her to Quincy Jones. Fascinated by her voice, Quincy invited her for background vocals in "You Put a Move on My Heart", a Quincy's single cut from the album "Q's Jook Joint" that was nominated for a Grammy Award.
From then on, Tania would be collaborating in projects featuring singers such as Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, and Brandy, including the single "Missing you" from the 1995 "Set It Off" soundtrack that also received a Grammy Award's nomination. However, "Into you" and "Stranger in My House" are her major brand label hits.
Tamia signed to Atlantic Records that released her first three albums: "Tamia" (1998), "A Nu Day" (2000), and "More" (2004). However, in 2005 Tamia split from Atlantic and began a South African tour along with her own band. During this year, she also recorded "Things I Collected†a song which is included in the "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" soundtrack.
In May 2006, Tamia's fourth album "Between Friends†was released by Gallo Records, and independent South African records label, but it was not available in the United States until November of that year after being released by Image Entertainment.
