red hot chili peppers

Alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers was formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, California by Anthony Kiedis, Michael Peter "Flea" Balzary, Hillel Slovak, and Jack Irons, the last two later replaced by John Frusciante, and Chad Smith.

During their early days, the band began to play regularly at the Rhythm Lounge, many other clubs, musical venues, and recording a demo tape that brought a record deal. Even though, any commercial success followed the release of their first three albums: "The Red Hot Chili Peppers" (1984), Freaky Styley (1985), and "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan" (1987).

However, "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan" hit number 148 on Billboard's Hot 200 chart, but Red Hot Chili Peppers could not take any opportunity to breakthrough into the mainstream due to Kiedis and Slovak serious drug abuse, that finally led to the death of Hillel Slovak in June 1988.

After the funeral, the band had to cope with each other, changing temporarily their lineup until they decided who would stay and who would go away after the sad experience that Slovak left with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Although, the band had numerous lineup changes later, they continued their career recording a new album, "Mother's Milk", released in 1989. This album went platinum and received critical attention after peaking number 52 again on Billboard Top 200, but it was not until 1991 when Red Hot Chili Peppers finally broke into the mainstream with "Blood Sugar Sex Magik".

This album sold over 7 million copies in the United States alone, but in 1995, the release of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ following album "One Hot Minute" was considered disappointing in comparison to their previous release.

Red Hot Chili Peppers revitalized themselves with "Californication” released in 1999, and from then onwards the band found their way with fans and critic’s acceptation recording the albums "By the Way" (2002) and "Stadium Arcadium", which is their most recent LP recorded in 2006.

In early 2007, Red Hot Chili Peppers announced a contest to find a director to release a new song, "Charlie", though YouTube. At this time, they also won five Grammy Awards.
