
At one time known as the fastest rapper in the world, Twista was born on November 27, 1973 in Chicago, Illinois. At birth, he was given the name Cavalier Terrell Mitchell, but later was known as Tung Twista. Twista’s music is spread out over various genres’ including hip-hop, rap, metal, gangsta hip-hop, Midwest hip-hop, and hardcore hip hop.
Twist began rapping by age 12, however, before hitting the big time he held several jobs including working at Burger King, at a factory, telemarketing, McDonalds, selling shoes, cutting hair, and as a security guard.
In 1991, Twista released Runnin†Off Da Mouth under the name Tung Twista. He was known as the fastest artist to sign with Loud Records and was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest rapper at 11.2 syllables per second. This record was beaten one year later; however, he regained the title and the lost once again. At the beginning of his career, he was a Muslim, which was vivid in his earlier recordings.
His first album was not very successful; however, he dropped the Tung off his name for his second album, which was “Resurrectionâ€, which was only released in certain areas of Chicago. His notability came through the underground mixtape circuit where he was featured on various rap mixtapes such as Chibangin, Psychodrama, DA Smart, and Triple Darkness.
Twista joined up with another Chicago act, Do or Die on the track “Po Pimp†in 1996. This single did very well by becoming a hit and landing Twista a contract with Atlantic Records. In 1997, he released “Adrenaline Rush†with “Mobstability†following in 1998.
After this Twista created his own Legit Ballin’ label and released two compilation albums, which were Legit Ballin’ in 1999 and Legit Ballin’ Vol. 2: Street Scriptures in 2001. In 2003, he released “Respect The Game, Vol. 3†and in 2006, “Volume 4: Tha Truthâ€.
Other albums under Twista’s belt include “Kamikaze†in 2004, “The Day After†in 2005, and “Adrenaline Rush 2007†in 2007 released by Atlantic Records. Singles include “Slow Jamz†featuring Jamie Foxx and Kanye West, “Sunshine†featuring Anthony Hamilton, “So Sexy†featuring R. Kelly, “Hit the Floor†featuring Pitbull, and “So Lonely†featuring Mariah Cary to name a few.
