Alternative rock grunge band Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington with an original lineup consisting of Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Dave Krusen, who eventually was replaced by Matt Cameron.
Pearl Jam emerged from the ashes of Mother Love Bone, a previous project in which all members were involved, but did not succeed until they switched to the name that would turn Pearl Jam into the most popular American rock & roll band of the 1990’s.
Like other Seattle-based bands, Pearl Jam found open doors after the success of Nirvana, becoming themselves one of the key bands of the grunge movement of the end of the century.
The band first played as Mother Love Bone at the Off Ramp club in Seattle on October 22, 1990 signing to Epic Records shortly after, but needing to change their name to Pearl Jam due to trademark concerns on the originally chosen name.
Eddie Vedder revealed once in an interview that Pearl was his great-grandmother Pearl, married to a Native American who shared with her a special recipe to fix a peyote-laced jam, although there are other theories about the name based on commonly held jam sessions among musicians.
In 1991, Pearl Jam broke through into the mainstream with their debut album "Ten" that peaked at number 2 on Billboard, staying there for four weeks, in addition, the album would remain on charts 250 weeks going RIAA Diamond with over 15 million copies sold worldwide.
Following their debut, all Pearl Jam albums have topped the Billboard charts and other international charts. With a consistent discography encompassing seven albums from 1991 to 2006, the band also has a number of live albums that have proven to be multi-sellers.
Pearl Jam's videography is comprised in five videos documenting their tours and peaking at number one on video charts as well. Along with compilation and soundtrack contributions, the members of the band have been involved in activism openly criticizing Bush administration at Lollapalooza 2007.
The band is also campaigning through the lyrics of songs such as "No More" and "Rockin' in the Free World" always bringing public attention to Pearl Jam's activities.
