Born Kathleen Emperatriz de Luna on November 17, 1987 in Bronx, New York, she now goes by Kat DeLuna.
At the age of 12 she sang on stage in front of over a thousand people when she was invited by the Queen of Merengue, Milly Quezada to see with her.
She moved from the Bronx to the cominican Republic until she was nine. At that time, they moved back to the United States. She started school at the Arts high school in New York for Vocal training. Many have said she has a 5 octave vocal range which is comparable to Mariah Carrey, Minnie Riperton, Captain Beef Heart, or a tuba.
She answered an ad in the Village Voice for an audition when she was a freshman and was accepted into the Latin Group Coquette. She went solo when she was 15 and then she entered herself in the Coca-Cola karaoke competition. She sang, “I Will Always Love You†and won. After this she was advised to write her own music.
She also learned Opera at a very young age. Her bi-lingual talents gave a lot to her song style. Some of the biggest names in music have praised this 19 year old artist. R. Kelly has even said she is a prodigy to the famous singer Alvaro Torres.
It wasn’t easy growing up, her parents were divorced and she found her and her sisters begging the neighbors for food. She swore she was going to make things better for her family, then and there. This made her want to stay in school so she could make a good life for her family.
She has signed with Epic records and now is promoting her first single worldwide for “Whine Upâ€. The video premiered on My Space on June 20 and released to radio on May 15 in the United States. Her album, “9 Lives†was released August 7, 2007. “Whine Up†was used for WWE’s Summerslam 2007 pay per view and the WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 soundtrack.
Her next single is titled, “Am I Dreamingâ€. She has also been featured doing a video for Omarion’s new song, “Cut off Time†from his new movie “Feel the Noiseâ€.
