Johnny Cash born J.R. Cash on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas achieved notoriety across several music genres including County, Rock & Roll, Folks, Blues, and Gospel. He is known for his nickname “The Man in Black†form the attire he often wore and for his simple introduction beginning his concerts, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.†The J.R. honestly did not stand for any special name, his parents could not decide on a name but both liked the initials, thus his given name was really J.R. Cash.
J.R Cash legally became John R. Cash at the time he enlisted in the United States Air Force, as they would not accept his initials as his name. However, when he signed with Sun Records in 1955 he choose for his stage name Johnny Cash.
Johnny Cash is a legend that will not soon be forgotten by generations today and in the future as he was a pioneer of the rockabilly and rock and roll scene in the 1950’s, an international representative of country music worldwide, and considered one of the greatest artists of all time.
His life long achievement include the writing of over a thousands songs, the release of several albums, many Country Music Awards, Grammy’s and various other awards ranging from vocal and spoken performances. His career spans around five decades and was himself an icon for country music in America. His accomplishments gave him permanent positions in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977, the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Johnny Cash passed away on September 12, 2003 only four months after the death of his wife, June Carter Cash. Johnny had been diagnosed in 1997 with Shy-Drager Syndrome. He was 71 at the time of his death.
