The Used is an alternative rock band formed in 1994 in Orem, Utah under the name Strange Itch with a former lineup consisting of Jeph Howard, Joel Pack, Matt Brown, and Branden Steineckert, playing small gigs during the bands early days.
In 1998, Strange Itch released a self-titled album and one year later Quinn Allman joined the band and changed the name to "Dumb Luck", a band that produced an EP entitled "The Naked Truth" in early 2000.
This album was followed by another lineup change with Jeph Howard moving to bass and Bert McCracken taking over the vocals, switching the band's name to "Used", sending some demo songs to producer John Feldman, who called the band to record a demo that eventually helped the band to get a record deal with Reprise Records.
In 2002, the band changed their name again after a Boston-based band claimed the trademark of the name "Used", hence the band was turned into "The Used" and then the band recorded a self-titled album released by Reprise Records in June of 2002.
"The Used" went platinum and made their breakthrough into the mainstream, peaking at number 63 on the Billboard 200 album chart. This album also included enhanced multimedia content with pictures, promotional material, links to the record company, and The Used website, as well as the videos showcasing the band's early performances.
The Used has recorded another two albums for a total of three, from which "In Love and Death", released in September 2004, received a RIAA platinum certification. The band has also released one demo album titled "Demos from the Basement"
In 2007, Reprise records released a CD/DVD "Berth", the special edition multimedia album "Lies for the Liars", and a live album also with multimedia support.
At a time Reprise also released "The Used's EP" along with a tribute album "Strung Out on The Used: The String Quartet Tribute" released in March 2007 by Vitamin Records.
The Used actual lineup, Bert McCracken (keyboards & vocals), Quinn Allman (guitar & vocals), Jeph Howard (bass & backup vocals), and Dan Whitesides (drums), are planning to release a DVD of their 2007 Australian tour. "The Used's 2nd EP" is also scheduled to be released sometime in 2008.
