Creed was formed in Tallahassee, Florida in 1995. Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti in the beginning of their singing-songwriting career were known as The Naked Toddler. They added Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips and then changed the name of the band to Creed. They found work here and there all around Tallahassee and eventually John Kurzweg decided to produce their band.
Their debut album, "My Own Prison" cost them $6,000 to record. They personally took the album around to radio stations in Florida in hopes of receiving radio play. They were rejected by many until Diana Meltzer from Wind-Up records heard them and signed them to her label. They re-released their album, which was a success and went to the top 40 of the Billboard Top 200.
In 1999, they released "Human Clay", their second album. This one went to number one on the Top 200. In fall of 2001, "My Sacrifice", the first single off the last album was released and was used in various promotions for the World Wrestling Association.
The band has been labeled as a Christian rock band, which they deny it. Scott Stapp was quoted saying, "We are not a "Christian band." We have no agenda to lead others to believe in our specific beliefs."
Creed was sued in 2003 by four venues saying Scott Stapp was either too drunk or high to do some of the songs. The lawsuits were later dismissed. There was trouble one right after another for the band in the following months. Most were directed at Scott Stapp, which eventually led to Scott leaving the band. It was announced in June of 2004 the band had broken up. Scott went solo and recorded, "The Great Divide" while the others formed a new band called Dark New Day.
In their time together they sold over 25 million albums, had 7 consecutive number one hits, and 24 different types of awards. Will the band get back together? Hard to say. Scott Stapp is not doing anything right now because no one will promote him. Time will tell we just have to keep watching and see what happens.
