So You Think You Can Dance is a dance reality show brought to the world from the United States. It is broadcast on the Fox Network, Fox Japan, CTV in Canada, Living in the UK and Ireland and on Network Ten in Australia.
The show is similar to other competition shows whereas contestants compete to be the overall winner of the season. The show premiered on July 20, 2005 with Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe as creators.
Contestants are chosen from all walks of life such as street dancers and national champions. They compete by performing various auditions with different dance styles and partners each week.
Prior to airing, auditions are held across the United States in the hopes of finding top dancers in the various cities. All types of dancers performing any type of dance can compete. Some of the dances that have been seen on the show over the last three seasons include jazz, bellydancing, clogging, contemporary, pop, modern, American jive, swing, disco, locking, popping, bboying, old and new school hip hop, krumping, paso doble, quickstep, lyrical, Broadway, Viennese waltz, smooth waltz, Argentine tango, mambo, cha cha, Cuban rumba, salsa and West Coast Swing.
The judges for the competition include Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and various guest professional dancers and choreographers take the last seat. Guest judges have been Dan Karaty, Shane Sparks, Wade Robson, Brian Friedman, Ron Montez, Doriana Sanchez, Nu Stylz (Olisa Thompson & Cicely Bradley), Jean-Marc Genereux, Mia Michaels, Debbie Allen, and Adam Shankman.
Winners:
Season one – Nick Lazzarini
Nick won $100,000 and the use of an apartment overlooking Central Park in New York City for one year.
Season two - Benji Schwimmer
Benji won $100,000, a new car, and a one-year contract to perform in Céline Dion's show in Las Vegas.
Season three – Began in March 2007 with auditions being held in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. This year the prize is $250,000.
