Many people know him from his instant fame from Summerland on the WB. Then he really hit it big when he was offered the part of Troy on High School Musical! Now he is even more famous with the release of high School Musical 2, which premiered on August 17 and had over 17 million viewers. This made High School Musical 2 the most watched show in history on the Disney channel!
Zachary David Alexander Efron was born on October 18, 1987 in San Luis Obispo, California. His mother and dad worked at a power plant, his dad an engineer while his mother was the secretary. He also has a younger brother named Dylan.
He began his acting career in high school doing theatre. He then worked in a theater named Melodrama and took singing lessons as well. He performed in many plays some of which were: “Gypsyâ€, “Peter Panâ€, “Little Shop of Horrorsâ€, “The Music Manâ€, and “Mameâ€. His drama teacher recommended him to an agent in Los Angeles, California.
He has appeared in a few television shows such as: ER, The Guardian, Firefly, and the WB’s Summerland. Summerland offered him a reoccurring role but he soon became a regular in 2004 opposite Kay Panabaker and Lori Loughlin. He since has appeared in several movies such as “Miracle Runâ€, which earned him a Young Artist award for playing one of two autistic twins. In 2005, he played in a music video for Hope Partlow’s “Sick Insideâ€.
Then in 2006, came the biggest performance of his career when he was offered to play Troy Bolton in “High school Musical†for the Disney Channel. Starring in this movie gained him popularity among the teens and Rolling Stones has since declared him the “poster boy for tweeny boppersâ€. Because of this, he has won the Teen Choice Award for 2006 and 2007 as well as being #4 on the IMDBPro’s STARMeter for the week of January 29, 2006. He has released several songs from High School Musical. One of the songs “Breaking free†was the fastest climb in history from #86 to #4 within two weeks!
High School Musical went on tour with their High School Musical Concert; however, Zac did not go on tour.
He has gone on to perform with many stars and appear in more shows even the Disney games. His popularity has grown so much he was chosen as one of the most Beautiful 100 people in 2007 by People Magazine.
He again was asked to be in another hit show called Hairspray opposite Queen Latifah and John Travolta. This was released on July 20, 2007, which he performed all his own vocals. For this performance, he cut and dyed hair and gained 15 pounds for the role.
