melle mel

Born Melvin Glover on May 15, 1961 in Bronx, New York he is now known as Melle Mel. This hip-hop legend is one of the pioneers of the old school hip-hop. He was the lead rapper for Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. His brother, Nathaniel Glover, a.k.a. Kid Creole, and Eddie Morris, a.k.a. Scorpio and Guy Todd Williams a.k.a. Rahiem and last but not least, Keith Wiggins a.k.a. Cowboy are the five guys which made up the Furious Five.

They began their recording career in 1979 with their first album "Superrappin". Then around 1982, Melle Mel was interested in more social subjects like the Reagan administration and drug policies. He released a song called, "The Message" which became a classic song instantly. This song talked about the struggles of living in the ghetto. The beginning of 2007 was the 25th Anniversary of "The message" and Melle Mel changed the spelling of his name to Mele Mel and released, "M3-The New Message."

In 1985, the group made an anti-drug song, "White Lines (Don't Do It)" Mel than appeared in the movie "Beat Street". He won a Grammy for his rap on Chaka Khan's hit song "I Feel for You". He also released two singles, "King of the Streets" and "Vice", which of course was released on the soundtrack for Miami Vice.

In 1988, the group reunited after four years and made the album, "On the Strength", but with all the newer rappers like Fresh Prince and Public Enemy, it bombed. Then Mel went on to win two more Grammy awards for work with Quincy Jones on the album, "Back on the Block".

Mele Mel now has a clothing line with Sedgwick & Cedar. In addition, he has released a children's book and DVD called "Portal in the Park", which includes a bonus CD of his narration of the book in rap in November of 2006.

On January 30, 2007, Mele Mel released his first solo album titled "Muscles".

Like many people of the eighties Mele Mel was a crack head. He did not need rehab to quit, he just noticed he did not look as good as he used to and just quit. Now that is will power Mele!
