Muse is a Devonian rock band that was formed in Teignmouth, Devon in 1997. The members include, Matthew Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard. They were attending the Teignmouth Community College in 1990. During this time, all three were performing in different bands. They soon formed a band together. They went by the name of “Rocket Baby Dolls†in 1994, in which they won a battle of the bands competition. They were shocked when they won the competition. This was the beginning for the band; at least it made them realize they should be more serious about their music careers. At this time, they changed their name to Muse, quit school, and moved.
Of course, just beginning they had to build a fan base and it took several years. Their first gig was in London and Manchester in 1998. They met Dennis Smith who was the owner of Sawmills. This led them to their first proper recording. Their self-titled album was released. Their second album, “The Muscle Museum EPâ€, was what attracted British music journalist Steve Lamacq. They did their first three albums with his label and then they had a bit of a problem finding another British label even with the success of their album. American record labels were eager to sign them. They even flew them over and arranged deals for them. Taste Media even helped them keep their deals with several companies overseas to keep control over their career in other countries.
Their success has been compared to Queen. They have had a great impact on the American music scene. Maverick records wanted them to change some of style; however, they refused and were dropped by the record label. Shortly afterwards, they were picked up by Warner.
The band has had a great following and produced several albums since signing with Warner including Origin Of Symmetry, Hullabaloo Soundtrack, Absolution and Black Holes, and Revelations.
When interviewed by Rock Mag in May of 2007 for the July issue, Bellamy confirmed they were working on their next album. He said they were working on a new sound of classical or symphonic music. It may include hiring an orchestra for some of the songs. He also said they were producing it themselves so they will have full control over it. Of course, their fans cannot wait to hear this new sound.
