Born Kenneth Gorelick on June 5, 1956 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he learned that sax would be his instrument when he saw a saxophonist performing on The Ed Sullivan Show, although most of that learning was empirical trying to emulate the songs he was hearing.
During those early practicing years, Kenny G was greatly influenced by Grover Washington, Jr. Later, he applied twice to the jazz band at Franklin High School, succeeding the second time around.
However, his professional jazz career officially began when he joined Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976, recording also with a funk group named Cold, Bold & Together while he was in Seattle attending the University of Washington.
After he graduated, he recorded two albums as saxophonist alongside the Jeff Lorber Fusion band and then he signed to Arista Records for the release of a debut solo album in 1982.
Playing mainly soprano saxophone, Kenny G also dominates Alto saxophone, Tenor saxophone, and the Flute, and has released eight studio albums between 1982 an 2002, from which his fourth album, "Duotones" introduced him to stardom.
Highly criticized but also highly acclaimed, Kenny has made guest appearances in albums of internationally renowned stars such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Natalie Cole, and won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition in 1994.
Kenny G has also recorded holiday albums, live albums, greatest hits albums, and cover albums, along with compilations released by Arista, three of them during 2006 and encompassing together his discography, he has sold over 30 million copies around the world.
After topping the US Top-charts through his career in the late 20th century, Kenny G began a new facet of his career playing tropical influenced music on his album "Paradise" released in 2002, including guest appearances by Chanté Moore and Brian McKnight.
Kenny was also invited to join on the album "The Duets", in which he alternated with LeAnn Rimes and Chaka Khan. In 2003, the RIAA named Kenny G the 25th highest selling artist in America.
Kenny G is also a pilot and golfer who likes to fly from one place to another and play golf, the most recently at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am tournament 2007.
