British singer, songwriter, and classically trained pianist Imogen Heap was born as Imogen Jennifer Jane Heap was born on December 9, 1977 in Romford, a large suburban town in East London. She moved with her family to Essex during childhood, where she studied European classical piano, cello, and clarinet.

During her teen years, Imogen began to write her own songs and learned to play guitar, drums, and Array Mbira, a modern African instrument from the Thumb piano class family. While attending boarding school, Imogen Heap learned how to teach herself music engineering, sequencing, sampling, and production on Atari computers.

Imogen Heap later attended the BRIT School of Performing Arts & Technology in Surrey and signed her first record deal with the independent record label Almo Sounds when she was 18.

Imogen Heap dropped from her mind the idea of becoming a full-time classical instrumentalist, returned to London and began to play electronica and alternative rock. She was invited to debut in live shows backing the band Acacia. She also performed between acts such as Eric Clapton and The Who concerts between 1996 and 1998.

Almo Sounds released Imogen Heap's debut album, "Megaphone" later in 1998, in which Imogen displayed a number of musical influences, but predominantly from Annie Lenox to Kate Bush, with whom she is often compared.

The 2000’s meant for Imogen Heap a challenge joining with Guy Sigsworth to make an experimental electronica duo called Frou Frou, who was active from 2002 to 2003. Frou Frou only released the album "Details" before taking different directions with no chances for a future reunion.

Imogen Heap then went back to the studio to continue her solo career with her second album "Speak for Yourself" was released in 2005 breaking into the mainstream after peaking at number 144 on Billboard. At this time, Imogen Heap also released "Live Session" an iTunes exclusive EP.

Throughout 2007, Imogen Heap' songs have been featured on different television commercials, films, and television series. Some of the most memorable are the songs "Headlock" which was featured in a Verizon Wireless commercial aired in February, and the instrumental version of "Goodnight and Go" introducing an online demonstration video promoting an upcoming Mac OS X v10.5.
