Hip hop rapper Gorilla Zoe was born Alonzo Mathis in Atlanta, Georgia and is also a member of the Boyz n da Hood, a Southern hardcore rap band formed in 2005, in which Alonzo replaced former member Jay Jenkins (Young Jeezy) for the release of their second album, "Back Up n da Chevy."
Best known by his stage name, Gorilla Zoe has combined successfully his solo career with other music projects, such as recording three songs alongside Grammy-nominated Yung Joc in his latest album, "Hustlenomics".
Gorilla Zoe signed to Bad Boy South records, a joint venture of Block Entertainment, and released his debut album "Welcome to the Zoo" in late September of 2007 and a couple of weeks later the album has sold over 51,600 copies. Although, Alonzo is one of the newest rappers of the time, his album debuted at number 18 on Billboards 200 chart.
"Welcome to the Zoo" has produced a hit song, "Hood Nigga", a single that was officially released in July 2007 on iTunes under the non-explicit name of "Hood Figga".
This song features a video in which Gorilla Zoe is driving his Chevrolet, picking up a young woman while he claims he has 24-inch tires, going through diverse locations until ending in a nightclub at midnight.
"Hood Nigga" peaked at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on Billboard Hot Rap Tracks. However, "Welcome to the Zoo" is an album with 15 songs, from which there are 9 other cuts launched as singles, including "Hood Nigga Remix".
Although, Gorilla Zoe's music has been catalogued as Southern hip hop music, many of his songs are purely gangsta hip hop, a subgenre of the hip-hop music.
Gorilla Zoe also collaborated on the first single from Boyz N Da Hood album "Back Up n da Chevy". Such song is entitled "Everybody Know Me" and it was also released through iTunes on April 2007.
There are also two singles from his collaboration with Yung Joc peaking on the Billboard charts, "Coffee Shop" and "Bottle Poppin'", both of them released on May 8, 2007 as part of Yung's second album "Hustlenomics".
