Born Fred George Lays Jr. On August 22, 1968 in Pictou County, Nova Scotia is better known in Canada as George Canyon a well-known country singer. He currently lives in Okotoks, Alberta.
When he was 12, he joined the Air cadets but at 14, he was discharged because he was diagnosed with diabetes. You can receive a pilot's license if you have an illness such as diabetes. He decided to pursue a medical career so he could help others who have been diagnosed with diabetes, as well. A few years later someone from the Academy told him that some of the rules had changed and he could enlist again even with diabetes. So he headed right over only to be disappointed again because the rules hadn't changed at all. He went back to school where he auditioned for a chorus role in Camelot however; he received the role of King Arthur instead. While performing a country band heard him sing and offered him a gig singing with them and he left to tour with them for the next six years.
While he dreamed of being a country singer, he held many jobs included a law enforcement officer, slaughterhouse inspector, a shipping receiver for Kraft, and an owner operator of his own recording studio.
He competed in Nashville Star in 2004 where he placed second. This made him very popular in Canada and he found quite a bit of support. Since Nashville Star, he has received a large amount of praise from fans and industry moguls alike. Soon after the show, he signed with Universal South. During his Nashville Star tour, he did some songwriting, recording sessions, and interviews. He loved this fast pace.
His number one hit about a stillborn baby called "My Name" won him a Juno award for best country recording of the year and he recently won four Canadian Country Music Awards including Male Vocalist of the Year and Fan Choice Award.
He and his wife Jennifer have two children. His wife is very supportive so much so she worked three jobs so he could sing at night. He said he loved playing Mr. Mom. He cherished that time with his children because now we does not get to see them much.
