Alicia J. Augello-Cook was born on January 25, 1980 in New York City, New York. Her parents separated and Alicia was raised by her mother. They lived in a one-room apartment; therefore, Alicia had to sleep on the couch. She started to develop her musical career and while doing it she had a few acting spots. She played one of Rudy's sleepover girls on an episode of the Cosby show. When she was fourteen, she wrote her first song, Butterflyz. When she graduated at the age of 16, she was accepted to Columbia University with a full scholarship, however; she turned down the scholarship. Instead, she wanted to continue her dream with music.

She went ahead with her plans in which she wrote and recorded, "Dah Dee Dah", which was released on the soundtrack for Men In Black. Then she released the songs "Rock Wit You" and "Rear View Mirror", which both were on soundtracks for Shaft and Dr Doolittle.

She finally released her own album, "Songs in A Minor" in 2001. This album sold over 250,000 in its first week alone. Her and her album won five Grammy's in 2002.

Her next album, "The Diary of Alicia Keys" was released n 2003 and went to number one. It sold 618,000 the first week. To date it has sold 8 million.

Keys is now working on her third album, which she says will be released in October of 2007. It is fresh and new she says. She never names an album until she has it all done. Then she knows what she wants to call it after all the work is done.

Alicia Keys has opened her own recording studio in Long Island, New York, by the name of The Oven Studios. She has even stepped into acting and has just finished, "Smokin Aces" and "The Nanny Diaries", which will be released in September 2007.

Alicia and her manager Jeff Robinson have signed a deal with Disney to develop live action and animated projects. Their first film is a remake of the 1958 comedy, "Bell, Book, and Candle". On top of this, they have formed a television production company called Big Pita. The first project is a CW Network series about a biracial child growing up in New York, similar to "Everybody Hates Chris."
