emery

Alternative Post melodic hardcore band Emery was formed in 2001 in Rock Hill, South Carolina by recent college graduates Toby Morrell (lead vocals & guitar), Matt Carter (guitar, keyboards & background vocals), and Joel Green (bass).

Emery later invited Devin Shelton (guitar & background vocals), Josh Head (keyboards), and Seth Studley (drums) to round out the band improving their sound with additional instrumentalists.

Emery named the band after a first grader that Toby Morrell met in college and, eventually, the band moved to Seattle, Washington seeking a better platform to develop a career in music within a emotional metalcore genre that is often referred to as "screamo".

The band took a plane at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the exact day of the terrorist attacks in America on September 11 2001. Emery did not realize what was going on until they stopped in North Carolina for a snack. That event was a sort of good luck sign to the band who found a new home on the West Coast, signing to Seattle-based Tooth & Nail Records label in early 2002.

Emery released the EP "The Columbus EEP Thee" in 2002 and began touring extensively until the following year when the band went to the studio and recorded their debut album "The Weak's End", produced by Ed Rose in 2003, but not released by Tooth & Nail until January 2004.

The band increased their activity performing at Spirit West Coast's "Rock the Park" festival, as well as at the Cornerstone Festival and the Warped Tour, in which they were featured in a documentary video released by that time.

Emery’s breakthrough into the mainstream and some facts about their member began to circulate insistently, including their religious beliefs. Emery members are Christians, but the band is reluctant to be considered a Christian rock band because they want to reach all of their audiences, not just a group of them.

After their debut album, Emery has released other two LPs, "The Question" released in 2005, and "I'm Only a Man", the band's most recent recording, released on October 2, 2007. This album hit number 78 on Billboard and has already sold 11,600 copies.
