Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on July 1, 1976 he was given the name of Algernod Lanier Washington. This rapper graduated from Fort Meyers High School in 1994.
He and his older brother Ronell Levatte founded their record label Big Gates Records, named after his brother who everyone called Big Gates. He recorded his first song on their label called, “Tell Dem Krackers Datâ€. He later signed on with Slip-N-Slide Records.
He recorded his first album titled, “The Real Testament†and soon released a single off it titled, “Got ‘Em Hatinâ€. On the song “I Wanna Love Youâ€, Plies was the original rapper. This was a hit for rappers Akon and Snoop Dogg. It reached the 17th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with out any promotion or video linked to it. It stayed for two weeks straight.
On July 2, 2006, Plies was arrested along with two of his entourage after a shooting happened in a nightclub where they were performing in Gainesville, Florida. It all started when they were told they had to cut their show by 15 minutes to give time for Lil’ Boosie. Then they opened fire into the crowd injuring five people but none were life threatening. Plies was released after posting $10,000 bail. Even though he never had a gun, he went on the news and told them that he was paying each person $10,000 for what happened to them.
Fearing bad publicity with promoting “I Wanna Love You†since he knew Snoop Dogg already had an unofficial version of it out there, he let it go and after that, he and Snoop decided to keep participating on one another’s albums.
By telling people how much of a struggle and how bad the conditions were while he was growing up he does not want them to think he is trying to impress anyone because he is not. He just knows almost everyone in his situation knows how hard it was since most of his friends and co-workers have lived in the same environment.
He writes about reality in his music and he says he has no real problems, just problems that come with the business. He said being locked up in prison with a life sentence is a problem. He has since started touring prisons to shows the guys from the streets that they do not need that. He wants to reach out to them in hopes of changing their lives for the better. He said as long as he lives in the streets he would have stuff to write about.
