norah jones

Geethali Norah Jones Shankar was born in Brooklyn New York on March 30, 1979. Those who love music will know her as Norah Jones. When she was four, her and her mom moved to Dallas where she grew up. She sang in church and learned to play several instruments, the piano, guitar, and the alto saxophone. When she was 16, her father gave his blessing for her to shorten her name and this is the name she has become famous with, Norah Jones.

Her great voice has gotten her noticed, but it is her talent with the jazz pianist has been illustrious. She was a guest on Marian McPartland's Piano jazz in 2003 and performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in 2004 and 2005. In 2002, her debut album was released titled, "Come Away with Me". It went to #1 on the Billboard 200. She received the Album of the Year at the Grammy's for this album that year. In 2004, her second album came out, "Feels Like Home", which has a hint of country. This album sold over 1 million in the first week alone.

2007 brought the release of her third album, "Not Too Late". On this album, she either wrote or co-wrote every single song. It had sales of over 720,000 in its first week. In this century, she has sold more albums than any other female artist.

At the 2003 Grammy Awards, she won a total of 8 Grammy's, the most an artist has ever gotten in a single year. She was so honored by this she could not express herself. She said at one time that she keeps her Grammy's still in a box in her closet. Since, she lives in a tiny New York apartment, and explains that the Grammy's are so heavy and does not want one to fall on her head, because then the Tabloids would have it in headlines the next day: "Norah Jones Murdered by her Own Grammy's". Maybe one day after she purchases a home she will then display her Grammy's, but until then they will be safely put into the closet.
