fleetwood mac

When it comes to the name Fleetwood Mac, most people bring to mind one of the most popular American pop-rock bands of the 1970’s and 1980’s. However, the origin of Fleetwood Mac dates back to 1967 when Mick Fleetwood and John McVie formed the band in London, England.

Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John McVie (bass) enlisted fellow guitarist Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green and together played across Great Britain showcasing a blues-rock sound that was labeled as neo-psychedelic. With this lineup, the band recorded some albums with regular success.

In 1970, Chicken Shack's keyboardist Christine McVie joined Fleetwood Mac after marrying John McVie. Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green began to display mental illness problems due to drug abuse and eventually were dropped from the band beginning a transition era in which Bob Welch became part of the band.

John McVie began to develop an increasing alcohol dependency that after a while contributed with the decision of the band’s move, relocating in Los Angeles, California by the mid 1970’s.

In America, Fleetwood Mac met the talented duo Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham that shortly afterwards were incorporated to the band's lineup, beginning the most successful era of the group with the releasing of the album "Rumours" in 1977.

Eventually, "Rumours" became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time in rock history, bringing one single hit after another. In the 1980’s, popularity of music videos aired through MTV and other music devoted channel and programs contributed with the group's consecration among both fans and critics.

However, this decade also marked the time of split up for Lindsey Buckingham that left the band to start a solo career, followed by Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie in the middle and late 1980’s.

Fleetwood Mac, however, went back and forth playing together through the 1980’s and 1990’s at the time that the band's commercial popularity declined.

With a live reunion album in 1999 and a new album in 2003, Fleetwood Mac went to the world arena tour and despite Stevie Nicks declared in 2007 that she will not carry on with the band again unless Christine McVie returns, people hope the band will play together again someday.
